Flaps and Ailerons
The Flap construction process begins  After all the detail parts are
constructed. In my case as a kit builder, ALL the required parts are
furnished. The key on this straight forward part is proper layout, skin
trimming, and hinge drilling.
The pre-formed Flap skin is just plane great. Sonex has really done a
great job on these pre-formed skins. The picture at left is what you
start with. These skins must be cut, holes layed out and drilled. The
white appearance is a Mylar like protective film that must be removed
from the rivet areas. I am leaving the coating on all other areas until the
final assembly on the aircraft to protect the surface of the Flaps and
ailerons.
Layout, drilling and cutting completed. ribs and
control arm are clecoed. Now on with final drilling,
debur and final assembly
Note the two sided tape holding the hinge. I found that this
helped maintain the required measurment from the flap
surface while initial drilling was accomplished,. It worked
quite well. The main thing was to make sure that the hinge
was straight so that it wont bing after installation.
Final assembly (right). The finished product. Below left
is both flaps completed and ready for mounting to the
wing. Both will be stored until needed later.
